چکیده

We describe the pitfalls encountered in deducing from classical double radio source observables (luminosity, spectral index, redshift and linear size) the essential nature of how these objects evolve. We discuss the key role played by hotspots in governing the energy distribution of the lobes they feed, and subsequent spectral evolution. We present images obtained using the new 74MHz receivers on the VLA and discuss constraints which these enforce on models of the backflow and ages in classical doubles.

A Brief Philosophical Encounter with Science and Medicine

We show a lot of respect for science today. To back up our claims, we tend to appeal to scientific methods. It seems that we all agree that these methods are effective for gaining the truth. We can ask why science has its special status as a supplier of knowledge about our external world and our bodies. Of course, one should not always trust what scientists say. Nonetheless, epistemological jus...

IR For Dummies: a brief non-technical introduction to what you can't see

In everyday life we encounter electromagnetic radiation in many different forms. Visible light, ultraviolet light, radio waves, and X-rays are all examples of electromagnetic radiation, differing only in wavelength. Infrared radiation occupies that region of the electromagnetic spectrum between visible light and microwaves. The figure below shows the major divisions of the electromagnetic spect...

baryonic matter distribution in the large-scale structures is one of the main questions in cosmology. This distribution can provide valuable information regarding  the processes of galaxy formation and evolution. On the other hand, the missing baryon problem is still under debate. One of the most important cosmological structures for studying the rate and  the distribution of the baryons is gal...

HI and Cosmology: What We Need To Know

There are three distinct regimes in which radio observations of the redshifted 21 cm line of HI can contribute directly to cosmology in unique ways. The regimes are naturally divided by redshift, from high to low, into: inflationary physics, the Dark Ages and reionization, and galaxy evolution and Dark Energy. Each measurement presents its own set of technical, theoretical, and observational ch...
